Miami Zoo the largest and oldest in Florida. Its unique feature is that it is the only tropical zoo in the United States. Consequently, you can see an impressive variety of animals, including some that are found nowhere else in the country.
The zoo was founded in 1948 in Crandon Park, then moved to the former Navy base, Richmond in 1980. The zoo is home to more than three thousand animals on 300 hectares, of which only 130 hectares are "landscaped." More than 100 individual exhibits can be viewed on the 5 km long visitor trail.
The entire territory of the zoo is divided into four main zones: Asia, Africa, Amazonia, and Australia. In 2015, a large, modern building with a new display of American flamingos was opened at the entrance. At the intersection of the zoo's main alleys is Dr. Wilde's World, an indoor seasonal interactive exhibit with a large iguana lake.
The zoo's history began in 1948 with the purchase of three monkeys, two bears and a goat from a traveling circus. The purchase cost the zoo $270 USD.
You can travel around the zoo in an air-conditioned monorail train that makes four stops, one for each section of the park. Tours are scheduled daily.
Admission: 22.95 USD for adults (over 13 years old), 18.95 USD for children (over three years old).
